Introduction to the Oyu Tolgoi Gold-Copper Mine Project in Mongolia:
The Oyu Tolgoi Gold-Copper Mine is located in Khanbaoged County, South Gobi Province, Mongolia (less than 100 kilometers from the Chinese border). It is known as one of the largest gold-copper mines in the world. Within the urban area of Bator, the gold belt contained in the mine is slightly smaller than the urban area of Ulaanbaatar. The preliminary proven copper reserves are 31.1 million tons, gold reserves are 1,328 tons, and silver reserves are 7,600 tons. The mine was put into operation in July 2013 and is expected to last for 50 years.
Oyu Tolgoi Gold-Copper Mine is often referred to as “OT Mine” to distinguish it from the nearby Tawen Tolgoi Coal Mine (TT Mine).
The Oyu Tolgoi mine is close to our border. Turquoise Mountain Resources, a subsidiary of Australia’s Rio Tinto, owns 66 percent of the mine, with the rest being owned by Mongolia. Open-pit mining at the Oyu Tolgoi mine is already in production. Turquoise Hill reported revenue of US$1.6 billion in 2014 from the sale of 733,700 tonnes of concentrate from the mine. Underground mining is planned to begin within two years. It is estimated that by 2020, the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine will account for one-third of Mongolia’s economic output. The 80-square-kilometer (30-square-mile) Oyu Tolgoi mine, the largest industrial enterprise ever built in Mongolia, employs 7,500 workers. In addition, in 2015, another huge copper mine, the Hamagotai copper-gold mine, was discovered in the South Gobi Province of Mongolia.
